MetroPCS Launched Its First Windows Mobile Cell Phone

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Affordable local mobile phone carrier, MetroPCS, today launched the first smartphone of the carrier – Samsung Code, also known as Samsung SCH-i220. It is kind of disappointing to learn that the Samsung Code runs on Windows 6.1 operating system, instead of the latest Windows 6.5 operating system. MetroPCS doesn’t mention whether the Samsung Code is upgradeable to Windows 6.5 or not, we doubt it does.

The Samsung Code feature a 2-megapixel digital camera, QWERTY keyboard, Stereo Bluetooth, 3G connectivity, full Internet browser, and a memory expansion slot that supports up to 32GB. Like other Windows phones, the Samsung Code is equipped with Microsoft applications, including contacts, calendar, tasks, notes, voice recorder and Windows Live. It supports ActiveSync technology for easy synchronization with PC and Microsoft Exchange Server.

“We are excited to add another smartphone to our lineup of the latest handsets,” said Roger D. Linquist, president, chief executive officer and chairman of the board of MetroPCS. “In a time when consumers want more from a phone than simply to talk or text, our customers will be able to take full advantage of the Samsung Code’s advanced features and services that will give them an enriched wireless experience. This is just another example of how MetroPCS is providing customers with more, all while maintaining the economical unlimited, flat-rate service that they can expect from MetroPCS.”

Samsung Mobile is excited to launch its first Windows Mobile® 6.1 powered smartphone to MetroPCS customers,” said Paul Golden, chief marketing officer of Samsung Telecommunications America. “The Samsung Code gives users the ability to balance work and personal communication with a variety of applications and features.”

MetroPCS doesn’t mention its pricing. What we know is customer could add $50 rate plan to get unlimited talk, text and data, including emails.

HTC Touch HD

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

The HTC Touch HD is a superb smartphone, if a little outdated by HTC’s ever expanding range of smartphones on the market.

It runs Windows Mobile 6.1 by default (you can upgrade to 6.5), which means if your into it, you can make your own programs/apps, without being bullied into using a single front.

What I loved:
* The massive screen, bigger than the iPhone screen, and a much higher resolution, 480×800. This means for superb website viewing using the opera browser.
* The design, I love minimalistic designs and the HD is fairly minimalistic device, with only 3 buttons. (power, vol up and vol down (2 less than the iPhone)).

What I didn’t like:
* After a while the screen can get very grubby, and without a screen protector (included) the screen could fall victim to scratches, allthough it took me a good 4 months to get even one.
* The price, I personally got the phone on a contract from a well known high street mobile phone carrier here in the UK for a small price, (£85) on a £35 monthly contact for 18 months. If your buying it for a pay as you go your looking at £400+ for this phone.

Overall:
If your looking for an impressive device I would recommend this one first and foremost based on personal experience, but HTC is always releasing more devices, so its worth shopping around first.

Nokia 7705

Monday, October 26th, 2009

If you fall into the category of people who value messaging over any other function in a phone, the Twist from Nokia may be up your alley. It is the latest in a new breed of squarish-shaped devices that hide full QWERTY keyboards within. It certainly has personality and that Nokia flair for design. Verizon is up to its old tricks when it comes to the software, however. Is the Twist twisted enough to overcome its quirks?
