Sprint Finalizes Tender Offer for iPCS Shares

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Sprint today announced that it has completed the first step necessary to acquire affiliate iPCS. A large percentage of iPCS stockholders accepted the tender offer of $24 per share, representing about 62.8% of iPCS’ total shares. Two more steps are necessary to make the acquisition complete. Sprint expects to close a “top-up” round on Friday, December 4, whereby it will own 90% of all iPCS shares. Once that is complete, Sprint will then complete a short-term merger with iPCS and acquire the remaining shares at the same price of $24 each.

AdMob Launches New Video Ad Unit with Real-Time Interactivity for iPhone

Friday, November 20th, 2009

“AdMob’s new Interactive Video Ad Unit brings together consumers’ love of watching videos on their mobile device with advertisers’ goal of providing an interactive, social experience for consumers,” said Omar Hamoui, Founder and CEO, AdMob. “We are excited to create new ways for advertisers to engage with consumers on their mobile devices and for the developers behind the most popular and engaging iPhone applications to effectively monetize.”

The Interactive Video Ad Unit will be sold primarily as an interstitial that will automatically play as an application loads. This auto-play implementation delivers a captive, engaged audience similar to video interstitials on the traditional PC web. It will also be available through a banner ad unit where consumers will click to play the video. The ad unit features customizable interactivity buttons within the video player, putting users a touch away from deeper brand engagement with an advertiser as they experience branded video content.

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

Start placing your bets folks,’cause it now looks like its almost certainly no longer a question “if” the Palm Pixi will drop to a free-on-contract price, but “when?” The latest stop on the saga is none other than Amazon, which is now offering the webOS-based phone for a mere $24.99 with a service plan, beating Walmart’s already bargain price by a full five dollars — which should be just enough to let you buy a second Pixi next month at the rate things are going.

Vodafone UK now serving up the HTC HD2

Friday, November 13th, 2009

We hate to tease our American readers who are holding their breath until it arrives on American shores, but Vodafone UK has begun selling the HTC HD2. Free on all tariffs over £35 on a 24 month contract or free on all tariffs over £40 on an 18 month contract, the HTC HD2 is a monster of a smartphone with a 1GHz Snapdragon processor and 4.3? WVGA capacitive touchscreen display. Plus most users will hardly realize that the HD2 is running Windows Mobile 6.5 thanks in part to HTC’s Sense UI. Just watch out for a sharp bezel around the 5 megapixel camera. It scratched the hell out of our desk.

Nokia’s N900 gets its marching orders

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

Nokia smartphone loyalists that feel S60 is a bit long in the tooth and are looking for something new should be all smiles today, as earlier Nokia announced that the Maemo 5-powered N900 smartphone has begun shipping out after a series of delays. To officially retail for around 500€ ($749 USD), the N900 has been spotted on various US-based websites for well under $600. And that’s a darn good deal, too, because you’re not going to find many phones at that price that offer up the following:

  • Maemo 5 OS
  • 3.5-inch WVGA (800 x 480) resistive touchscreen display
  • 110.9 × 59.8 × 18mm, 181g
  • Portrait-orientation sliding QWERTY
  • Mozilla-based browser, full Adobe Flash support
  • ARM cortex A8 processor
  • 32GB internal memory
  • 5.0 MP Carl Zeiss camera with dual-LED flash, auto-focus and sliding cover
  • MicroSDHC support up to 16GB
  • FM transmitter
  • Quadband GSM/GPRS/EDGE, WCDMA 900/1700/2100, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth with A2DP
  • GPS
  • 1320 mAh battery

One word of caution: as it currently stands, the N900 will not play nice with the new SIMs from 3 in the UK, Ireland, Sweden, Denmark and Austria, although a software update to resolve this comparability issue is due out before the end of the year. A launch video from Nokia is lying in wait after the jump.

iPhone App: When you need to find the closest hotel for the “other woman”, use Hilton

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

We’ve all been there. It’s 3 in the morning and you’re chatting up a beautiful university student who has had way too many shots. She grabs your arm and looks deep into your eyes, channeling a Freudian lust for the love that her father never gave her growing up. She asks to go home with you. Now, you can’t say yes since you’re married and have two beautiful children, but the allure of being balls deep inside a woman half your age is too resisting to pass. You may never have this opportunity again, your wife stopped performing fellatio last decade, and besides, you need the confidence boost by convincing yourself that doing this will make you a man again. Morally grounded men might pull out their iPhone and call the a taxi for this sweet young lady. Some will use the large, multitouch screen to zoom in on their children’s faces as a reminder of what’s waiting for them back home. You’re not one of those men. You’re going to use your iPhone to find the nearest Hilton Hotel, navigate to it, place it on the night stand, and then reach for it once again once when she is in the reverse cowgirl position so you can snap a quick video so you’ll never forget that one night you kicked ass.
