FCC unsatisfied and troubled by Verizon Wireless’ response regarding its ETF and $1.99 phantom data fee

Monday, December 28th, 2009

In a scathing one page response, FCC Commissioner Mignon Clyburn cut Verizon Wireless to its knees by saying the answers the wireless carrier provided in response to the FCC’s investigation were “unsatisfying and, in some cases, troubling.” The commissioner chided Verizon for the fluctuating rationale behind its early termination fee, which has been expanded to include not only the cost of the device itself but operating and retail costs as well. She pointed out that high voice and data costs already subsidize these business costs and the fees levied, especially those at the end of a contract, are not in the public’s best interest. Clyburn further condemned Verizon by stating that she was “alarmed” by these $1.99 phantom data fees and that Verizon can not just bury its head in the sand and ignore this issue by saying it does not exist. The letter concludes with a stern reprimand reminding Verizon Wireless that they should be “focusing primarily on developing innovative products, maintaining affordable prices, and providing excellent customer service”. Hear that Big Red? Clyburn also promises to discuss this issue in greater depth with her colleagues next year. That water in which Verizon Wireless is standing just got a little bit hotter.

Google Nexus One in Jan 2010

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

Can’t wait for the Google nexus one it s really what I wanted for a very long time on a phone that will not confuse me or anything. The Nexus one is not being released till January 2010 which is still a long time away. Wish they would have launched pre Christmas and it would have been the most wanted electronic for the year But anyways if anyone buys the Nexus One should also buy Nexus One Accessories.

The Google Phone May Be Coming Soon

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

Now here’s an exciting picture for you, folks–what you’re seeing right there is a shot of the Google Phone, the Nexus One. Pics of this thing have been leaking like a sieve to the web at large and initial reports are conflicting at best.

Google employees, of course, are operating under STRICT agreements not to talk specs–if they actually say anything even related to specs their firstborn children vanish in a puff of smoke, and if they don’t have any children, well, something ELSE vanishes instead.  Okay, that’s just a joke, but still–the Google crew may be contractually forbidden from saying word one, but that didn’t stop the blogosphere!  In fact, a San Francisco blogger named Cory O’ Brien got one of these fellas and clames that it’s basically an iPhone but with a slightly larger screen and a scroll wheel.  PC World, however, was underwhelmed.

And naturally, the whole thing runs on Google’s own OS, Android.  Admittedly that was pretty much a given, but still.  Look for this one to launch possibly in 2010, and keep it here for all the latest details on the Nexus One!

Vodafone reportedly ditching the HD2 as iPhone launch looms

Friday, December 11th, 2009

Here’s an interesting one. Vodafone, which is one of the few carriers in the world right now with access to HTC’s HD2, is reportedly not going to stock the handset any longer once its current supply evaporates. The reason? Why, that’s a fantastic question! According to a company spokesperson, there has been a “massive amount of interest” in the big-screen mobile, with initial stock “selling out quickly and subsequent deliveries used to fulfill backorders.” Call us crazy, but it seems a wee bit foolish to can a product that’s selling well — unless, of course, Voda has a certain amount of iPhones that it’ll be required to sell just a few months from now (or else buy ‘em itself). Whatever the case, we’re told that the operator “will not [be] re-stocking the HTC HD2 for general consumer sales once current stock runs out,” so if you’re jonesing for one, ten minutes ago would’ve been a great time to buy.

Nokia confirms New York and Chicago flagship stores are closing in early 2010

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

No surprises here, but Nokia has confirmed a Nokia Experts report today that the company will be shutting down its North American flagship stores in New York and Chicago, leaning on big boxes and carriers to handle the in-store experiences going forward. Considering the fractional market presence Nokia has in the States compared to the UK — where it’s closing its Regent Street location — the move comes as no shock, but it’s still a shame to see these really attractive, high-tech hero locations close down. The way we saw it, these stores were never about sales; they were about exposing Nokia to the public and vice versa in a cool, hip environment, and regardless of how you feel about the company’s handsets, they’d effectively accomplished that with the flagship strategy. Here’s Nokia’s official statement, which confirms our opinion but takes the questionable stance that the stores have outlived their function now that “consumer awareness in the US has grown substantially”:
“In North America, over 90 percent of consumer purchases are made through carriers - Nokia continues to support our relationship with carriers in this market, as well as the continued expansion of our retail partner network with the likes of Amazon and Best Buy (for example), in line with our strategy. As we continue to expand our services and solutions offerings across these various channels, we have decided to close the NY and Chicago stores to allow more concentration on our other channels.

The Flagship stores were originally conceived to inspire and educate consumers to the benefits of mobility through an innovative retail experience, and to broaden the appeal of the Nokia brand. Since opening the stores in NY and Chicago (2006), consumer awareness in the U.S. has grown substantially. Weighing those dynamics with Nokia’s clear strategy in North America, and our well-established retail channel with third parties, we will close these two stores (New York and Chicago) in early 2010.

This decision was made to create clear alignment with our local market strategy and, in addition, as part of a global realignment of our retail strategy in overall.”

Nokia Capital Markets Day sees new and improved Symbian UI

Friday, December 4th, 2009

With Apple and BlackBerry nipping at Nokia’s heels, the Finnish company is planning on making some major changes in 2010. Nokia made some pretty big announcements at its Capital Markets Day yesterday with forecasts for 2010 as well as a demo of a significantly improved Symbian UI. We’ve made a lot of jabs against Symbian looking pretty dated and being in need of a major overhaul, and it looks like Nokia might be finally answering the call. Nokia CEO, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo says:In 2010, we will drive user experience improvements, and the progress we make will take the Symbian user interface to a new level. As an operating system, Symbian has reach and flexibility like no other platform, and we have measures in place to push smartphones down to new price points globally, while growing margins. I see great opportunity for Nokia to capture new growth in our industry, by creating what we expect to be the world’s biggest platform for services on the mobile. A better user experience and pushing down price points will definitely help Nokia retain its global lead, but that experience and those new prices are going to have to be really competitive. Interestingly, while Nokia predicts that mobile device volumes will be up 10% in the next year, it sees its own volume market share to be flat in 2010. Whatever Nokia has planned, it’s in it for the long haul.
