iPhone 4 launch day line watch (updated)

From the London store

Welcome to the latest installment of our annual tradition: the iPhone launch day queue experience in pictorial form. London’s getting the party started early (not as early as some, admittedly) with a sizable crowd turning the corner from the Apple Store at Regent Street, but we’ll keep this post updated with imagery from all over the place.

Update: Now with reports from San Francisco!

Update 2:
NY joins the fray!

Update 3: We added some of the more interesting reader-submitted stories.

Update 4: Reports from Palo Alto and San Jose, California!
9:10PM ET
— Andras H is first in line at the Paris store along with about 100 others. Bonus? He’s a pretty stellar photographer.

8:55PM ET — Back in London, the crowd has swelled to a healthy 195 and negotiations have begun between people trying to trade up into more favorable positions. Others have opted for the waiting-by-sleeping approach.

7:30PM ET — Bobby H. from Naperville, IL just sent us a whirlwind of a story (pardon the pun). “We were just rushed into the back of the Apple store… the Tornado sirens went off. Apple has let all people stay in line inside the store. Sadly all our chairs are outside in the rain.” Rest in peace, outside seat furnishings of old. Engadget Mobile’s Chris Ziegler, perched high in his throne atop Chicago, corroborates reports of a few drizzles.

6:35PM ET – Mr. Jobs hasn’t made his customary appearance at either Apple Store in Palo Alto, CA quite yet, but our good friends at IntoMobile certainly have. Four from the publication have been taking turns heading a line thirteen strong for the past five hours so far. They’ve come well-equipped, with a portable Duracell battery to charge their MacBooks while they wait, and, yes, a Honda gasoline generator should that run out of juice.

6:30PM ET
— Marcus M, reportedly 10th in line at a Kansas City, MO store, is biding time with a PlayStation 3, FIFA ‘10, and a Honda Generator.

5:30PM ET – The Valley Fair Apple Store in San Jose, California is Steve Wozniak’s usual hangout, but there’s no Woz on deck today — just seven folks camped out with little entertainment to speak of. Line leaders tell us they’ve been here two and a half hours so far. Good luck, folks!

5:00PM ET
— We just dropped by The Cube on 5th Ave. in NY, and it’s brimming with action as usual. There’s a very brief line of pre-orderers, and then a solid contingent of non-pre-orderers who are prepped to face a warm night on the sidewalk.

Greg Packer holds his customary, subsidized place at the front of the line.

We spoke with Joey Mallon, who fronts the non-pre-orderer line, after arriving on 7am yesterday (Tuesday) with a couple of friends from Boston. The guy is just out of high school, and the world is his oyster.

4:55PM ET Meanwhile in San Francisco, arguably home to more venture capitalists than there is venture capital, the line has yet to really hit its stride. We just stopped by and counted only about six people, but at least four more spots were being sold off — that’s entrepreneurialism for ya. The second and third person in line had been there since Monday night and Tuesday, respectively, and as for lucky numero uno? There’s an online auction for that spot.

4.14PM ET — We’re getting rolling early here in London. It’s evening time for the Brits, yet there’s already about 70 of these eager souls queuing up. The first fella got here at midnight on Wednesday and he’s still cheerfully awake. Good for him.

Android OS 2.2 build FRF72 is not final, Froyo still percolating

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

android-logo-good

A leaked version of Android OS 2.2 (Froyo), build number FRF72, was thought by some to be the final GM candidate of Google’s latest mobile operating system. Well, Google employee “Ry Guy” dropped into the official Google Android support forum — in a thread titled “when will be available the Nexus One update to Android 2.2 Froyo?” — to let the following be known:

Just dropping in to let you know that the FRF72 build that is floating around is not the official update. The Android team is feverishly working to get a final version out the door, but like passion-ate has mentioned this will only happen once a release candidate meets our quality criteria.

Since today is the Summer Solstice, we know things will be heating up a bit so hopefully Froyo will be on its way shortly. Thanks for your continued patience!

More fixes and tighter quality control is always a good thing, but we do kind of want the final version, like…now!

iPhone 3G, iOS 4, and you — what’s missing (spoiler: multitasking)

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

While iOS 4 is delivering on every promise for the iPhone 3GS users out there, as we were all told up front, the iPhone 3G would be missing some of those touted new features. Granted, we knew such disparities would exist but were never given the finer details. Now that the final build is percolating through the internet, we decided to take a look at what features are and aren’t working on the earlier year’s model.

What’s there

* Folders
* Threaded mail
* iTunes playlist creation / editing
* 5x digital zoom: just tap on the display near the capture button, but be warned, it doesn’t paint a pretty picture
* iBooks: we were having issues with the earlier build, but it seems to be running fine after today’s official download — PDFs work, too.
* Photos: you can now sort by albums, events, faces, and places
* Game Center: the icon is present, but as of this writing we’re unable to connect to the servers. (Update: a number of readers saying it didn’t come with today’s download. We nabbed ours as a gold build, which might explain the discrepancy despite still being considered “up to date” by iTunes.)
* Spell check has been updated
* Spotlight search: you can search the web and Wikipedia from the home screen search bar. That said, not all our queries — “Engadget,” for example — weren’t offering the option. [Thanks, jkane08]

What isn’t

* Multitasking: this is the big one. Double-tapping the home button doesn’t give you the handy menu, there’s no fast app switching, and background use is missing in action.
* Screen lock: normally in the multitasking menu (which isn’t available on 3G), it’s nowhere to be found, even under Settings. Bummer.
* Home screen wallpaper: you’d think this simple addition would make the cut, but sadly no. The dock has been given a visual upgrade, though.
* Bluetooth Keyboard support: we haven’t tried this ourselves, but an influx of reports from Twitter suggest this is also a no-go.

Cellphones, Mobile Handsets iPhone 4 to have 512MB of RAM, double the 3GS and iPad?

Friday, June 18th, 2010

Apple has traditionally been — how shall we put it — cagey with revealing memory and CPU specifics of its mobile devices, but MacRumors is today reporting its discovery that the fourth-gen iPhone’s RAM apportionment will be a very healthy 512MB. We’ve heard similar rumblings from reliable sources of our own. What it means is that iPhone 4 users can look forward to not only the same processor (though potentially at a lower speed) as their iPad compatriots, but also double the memory allowance. Of course, this will hardly be the first handset to offer half a gig for the OS to dance inside, but at least Apple’s keeping up with the times. Wouldn’t wanna disappoint all those pre-orderers now, would we?

Bell launches the HTC Legend

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

bell-legend

Virgin Mobile is no longer the only Canadian carrier to offer the HTC Legend, as today its parent company, Bell, announced that it too will be carrying the milled aluminum handset. Sporting the same $79.99 price tag for those that opt for a 3-year contract, the only major difference between the two is that the Bell Legend goes for $399.99 off contract while the Virgin model goes for $349.99 with a 30-day commitment. Anyone in Canada thinking of picking this up, or are you going to sit tight and see what happens with the rumor of a Telus Desire?

T-Mobile’s Samsung Galaxy S outed by way of FCC?

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

We’ve already heard enough talk — both from our own tipsters and other publications — to say with some level of confidence that T-Mobile plans on unleashing the mighty Galaxy S at some point in the next month or two, but is this the smoking gun? There’s now a phone called the SGH-T959 in the FCC’s certification database that features AWS 3G support, and while external photos are rudely left out, the device’s outline clearly mimics that of the generic, unbranded Galaxy S that we’ve been seeing since its unveiling back in March. At any rate, we’ve got this Samsung Android event coming up stateside here in a couple weeks, so we should figure it all out then.
